@IBX Philly #BlueButton Workshop

Today I am in Philadelphia as a guest of Independence Blue Cross to take part in a BlueButton Workshop.

Watch out for more blog posts…

The objectives for today, as laid out by Seth Friedman (IBX) and Harm Scherpbier (Mainline Health):

  • Gather health IT pros
  • Review Current/future states
  • Discuss opportunities and barriers
  • Philly BlueButton Pilot

We have an amazing group of experts that are a cross section of Healthcare both locally and nationally.

Erin Poetter Siminierio of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT kicks the day off to explain what is BlueButton and why does it matter.

Erin pointed out that the OpenNotes pilot discovered that on average patients uncovered two errors in their medical record when they had access to the data to review.

It is great to be here with Gajen Sunthara the BlueButton Presidential Innovation Fellow.

BlueButton use is exploding.

BlueButton solves “Hyper-Portalosis” (living with multiple portals -which was never the intent of Meaningful Use)

BlueButton is fundamentally simple. Get my health records. Download it. Share it as they want:

Empowerment through:
- Reference
- Check
- Share
- Use in Apps.

BlueButton is built on a portfolio of national standards.

BlueButton is a container for multiple types of data:
- Provider
- Hospital
- Pharmacy
- Diagnostic labs
- Health Insurance
- State Vaccine Registries

in surveys 60% of respondents indicated that accessing their health information is very useful.

BlueButton is at the nexus of:
- Mobile Health
- Payment Changes
- Wearables
- Health Policy Changes
- New Health plans (High deductibles etc.)

Caroline Coy also spoke about the work ONC has done to spur innovation across state lines. Funded small pilots with Humetrix and NATE to demonstrate how BlueButton information can be used. Helping to break down the portals. Check out the PHR Ignite Pilots: http://2.healthca.mp/1uLi4yj

Jane Sarasohn-Kahn is also here to present the patient view. More form that session later…
