CMS #BlueButton Text to JSON File Converter

BlueButton Structured Text Format

For the past few weeks I have been working on a utility that I can use as I work on the BlueButton on FHIR solution at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The python command line utility will let me take a CMS Version 2.0 Medicare BlueButton text file and convert it to a JSON structured format. I am posting the code (which I know is not pretty!) to my github account here:

This might prove useful for the community and I welcome feedback to fix any bugs.

Using the Python-BlueButton conversion utility

To use the utility. Download the code from github and install as per the instrucitons in the file. Then:

  1. Download your CMS BlueButton file from MyMedicare.gov
  2. run:

python bbp.py CMSFILE {input file} {output file}

where {input file} is the BlueButton file you downloaded and {output file} is the json text file to be created.

Once you have the output file you can use one of the online JSON conversion sites and convert to CSV format. Try https://json-csv.com.

When you download the CSV file you can import the result into Excel and get to work with your data.

If XML is more your thing you can convert the JSON file to XML using: http://2.healthca.mp/1IGfkpX

Have fun with this and let me know if you find it useful.
