#CM4H16 Alignment of Precision Medicine with Health Information Sharing

Alignment of Precision Medicine with Health Information Sharing

Dave Bennett, Executive Vice President, Product and Strategy, Orion Health

Learn how precision medicine is helping healthcare transition from disease-centric to prevention-centric, and how tapping into the vast amount of data available in healthcare, along with alignment with health information sharing can inform a model that helps consumers better manage their own health and the health of their families.

Industry Trends

From Disease-Centric to Prevention-Centric
Consumerization
Precision medicine and Genomics
Social Determinants of Health

Most data is outside Medical

60% Exogenous
30% Genomic sequencing
10% Medical

Factors influencing Health:

  • Genetics 30%
  • Environment 5%
  • Behavioral 40%
  • Social 15%
  • Medical 10%

Providers and patients need better cognitive support.

Precision Medicine is here today but our systems are not setup to cope with it.

We need a patient record that is very different.

We should learn from other industries

Apple has 75-80,000 Casandra nodes (for iTunes movie streaming etc.)

In Healthcare we need to address:
– High Volume and Velocity
– Flexible and Scalable data model
– Data Liquidity
– Privacy and Security

In memory computing to NoSQL Cassandra

AWS, NoSQL, Cassandra, Spark SQL Elastic

Cassandra is open source. Thousands of developers are working to improve it.

Long term investment is protected by the ecosystem that grows around the platform.

Need to support Google-like search capabilities.

Spark – One of leading in memory analytics engines.

Open APIs – How to manage them.

You need to manage: Security, Privacy, Throttling

Think of your application as an API.

Build as API and UI that talks to the API.

We have not operationalized integration in Healthcare.

Healthcare has the opportunity to leapfrog other industries by doing this in real-time.
