#Health2con Ed Hernandez @dredhernandez , CA State Senator – Chair Committee on Health

Real time notes from the tenth annual Health2.0 fall conference.

CA has raised smoking age to 21.

Senator Hernandez pushed through the smoking age legislation.

Affordable Care

This is bigger than any other health legislation.

ACA has triggered lots of change:

  • Consolidation of Health Plans
  • Large Medical Groups
  • Hospital System mergers

Big challenges:
– 1/3 of CA population on MediCA

We wrote a law that provides an insurance card for patients but we didn’t address the network of providers needed.
– Patient need growing
– Doctors retiring

Demand in:
– Inner Cities
– Rural communities

The population with highest need but least access.

How do we control health care costs:

Proprietary platforms that don’t speak to each other.
Health records should belong to the patient.

We need to look at how we engage consumers in their own health.

The mobile device is available in even some of the most under resourced areas.

We have to learn to take advantage of the smartphone.
