Platform recursion. The internet is a platform and many platforms also exist on the Internet. Marc Andreessen Attempts to define platforms and comes up with 3 types.
- Access API
- Plug-in API
- Runtime environment
Marc promotes the runtime environment option. Although more difficult to build it is simpler for the developer because it handles everything. But isn't the Runtime environment a closed platform? One where the ability to run your service is dependent upon the cooperation/benevloence of the application platform owner.
The environment has to be compelling if people are going to make the investment.
