#DHIC Leo Nicacio of @FlatironHealth – Tackling Cancer

More from Digital Health In Context 2015….

Leo Nicacio, MD of Oncology at Flatiron Health.

Fighting cancer is incredibly disjointed.

Th best data comes from Clinical Trials but only 4% of patients are in clinical trials.

Data is in clinical health care organizations and is often siloed.

Unleashing data is linked to our ability to set data free.

Data Liquidity is right data to right person at the right time.

80% of cancer clinic have implemented EMRs.

Interoperability is a barrier! There is a Lack of Standards.

Interoperability assumes we can structure all of the data using a standard vocabulary. However most data is in unstructured notes.

80% of the value comes from unstructured data.

Structured and Unstructured data need to be combined. It drives completion of information and filling of data gaps.

Very few EMRs are cloud-based. Most are locked in closets or maybe data centers.

Medscape Survey: 35% believe EMR improved Patient Services
34% believe it made it worse.
67% believe it reduced Face-to-face time.

The realities of unleashing data:
– It is raw
– It is interdisciplinary
– It is cumulative

Advancement will come from the integration of Science, Institution and Technology.

“Software as a drug”

We need to build an Engine/ Platform and not a tool.

R = G
N = 1
